Since the border was closed due to extreme weather conditions (which was clearly communicated by authorities beforehand, nevertheless we waited the whole day until 19:00, when the border police said they would not open for today) we could not go to Uyuni and that also means we will not be able to travel back tomorrow morning. The company Trans Salvador did not take any responsibility and wanted us to sleep in the bus waiting for a potential bettering of the storm in the morning when outside it had -20 degrees celsius. They were offering to turn on the engine and heater every 3h to heat the bus a little bit but they could not keep it running since according to the driver the Diesel would not have been enough to take the further travel he was planning after Uyuni. The only reason why we then returned to Calama instead of staying in the bus at minus 20 degrees is because the Carabineros were forbidden the driver to do this practice. Either way he was not looking for solutions but instead started fighting against us because we didn’t want to stay in the bus at minus 20 degrees, telling us we should look for a hostal instead that we would have to pay for. Since there were no more hostals in the small border town because a lot of people were stuck, the only option would have been to stay in the bus. After all he got really mad with us because we explained the situation to the police. Not trying to find a solution together or asking the company for an emergency support but getting mad at the customers was the worst of it all.

What a joke this company is, canceling my trip the evening before departure. The excuse of a broken bus and putting us in a small minivan all the way by another even worse bus company (trans ricardo). Before leaving Calama the bus circled around waisting 1 hour just to change busses before leaving Calama!!
